26 Cornet Street opens with aplomb and a queue
Ahead of opening and the Press arrival this morning, a person with a large, white, empty paper carrier was standing outside 26 Cornet Street. Hhhm, was it a bystander or an eager shopper? The question was soon resolved when another bod joined 'the person' and then another and another. A polite queue officially formed, awaiting the opening of National Trust of Guernsey's Christmas shop at 26 Cornet Street; when the doors were opened, our pupils from Notre Dame were, literally, muscled through the shop floor and into the parlour, where they officially opened our shop.
Izzy McIndoe and Jacob de Jersey were beautifully in step and word perfect. You could have heard a pin drop. President Martin Ozanne, Manageress Elizabeth Lihou and visitors all loved this very touching moment. Thank you Izzy, Jacob and Notre Dame.
Elizabeth and Robin, who manage our shop at 26 Cornet Street, sent updates throughout the day and it's true to say that opening day was record breaking. Huge thanks to Sara Hall for her unique Dickensian Mice - if sixty mice equals 60 minutes - that made for a very busy hour of opening. If you're a fan of Robertson's jam memorabilia, we're selling the last of stock that's available. Then there's Spode China, cards with amusing quotes by Jane Austen, RHS cards and much more, including chocolate and more limited edition bone china. All of this, in a very lovely timeless space. As Elizabeth said "We finished decorating the shop, we sat down on the sofa in the parlour and we thought how lovely it would be, to live here."
That's the unique spirit of our Victorian Shop and Parlour at 26 Cornet Street.
