Encouraging news for safeguarding Island biodiversity
Apropos headline news in the Guernsey Press Saturday 28 March 2026, we are encouraged to see clear messaging from Deputy Neil Inder that the premature clearance of land ahead of planning applications will not be tolerated within the planning process. This is an important and welcome step.
The removal of vegetation, habitats and natural features before proper assessment undermines both the spirit and integrity of the planning system, as well as the Island’s wider environmental responsibilities.
A planning framework must work fairly for all—balancing the needs of development with the protection of Guernsey’s natural and historic landscape. The indication that such actions may carry consequences, including requirements for remediation, signals a more responsible and considered approach going forward.
We hope this position will help deter or better still, eradicate pre-emptive site clearance and support the long-term safeguarding of the Island’s biodiversity and green spaces.
