The Button Pushers at National Trust Guernsey Summer Courtyard Concerts 2018

The Button Pushers L-R: Jorge Amorim, Guy Mitchell, Paul Corcoran, Martin Doran If it’s an Irish Folk Band at The Summer Courtyard Concerts, then it must be The Button Pushers who delighted the crowd at the second performance of this year’s concerts. For 2018, the familiar duo of Paul ‘Corky’ Corcoran on vocals and guitar and Guy Mitchell, vocals, were joined by Martin Doran on bodhran and Jorge Amorim on guitar. The addition of two musicians and their instruments makes an already strong duo into a fulsome band, without losing any of the heart of their sensitive and thought-provoking set-list. The unusual bodhran drum, played by Martin Doran (with a baton resembling a bone) added a soft anchorage to the ballads. Shining evening sunlight played a part with perfectly positioned rays on Martin's intense concentration and made for mesmeric viewing. With two new members, an expanded programme weaves in and out of some jaunty fresh numbers, always with that Button Pusher flavour of making something new feel warmly familiar. It was good to hear again, some of last year’s repertoire, a crowd favourite being The Dubliners' 'McAlpine’s Fusiliers', a witty Irish take on the Thatcher years and more from The Dubliners, Christy Moore, Mickey Dam and Pàdraig Stevens. 'Wistful, amusing, talented and foot-tapping entertainment' – sums up an evening with The Button Pushers and National Trust of Guernsey is thrilled to have hosted another highly enjoyable performance of their warm and engaging music.
