TWO GOLDEN ANNIVERSARIES IN 2017
Two Golden Anniversaries, neither of which should be allowed to pass without some remark, have taken place this year. First, 1967 saw the National Trust of Guernsey incorporated by an Order in Council which put it on a legal basis, gave it power to hold property in its own right and set out general purposes which remain in place, and relevant, fifty years on.
Those general purposes included references to the preservation and restoration of places and buildings of historic or other interest, and the consideration of Island planning. The second notable Golden Anniversary is, then, the creation in 1967 of the Island Development Committee, as successor to the former Preservation of Natural Beauty and Control of Agricultural Land Committee. The Committee’s comments in presenting its Outline Development Plan that year merit reflection in today’s economic and political situation.
