WANTED: More Costume Volunteers at the Folk & Costume Museum (Form attached)

Folk and Costume Museum | Heritage | How you can help

Volunteer position: Costume Assistants (For those interested please complete and return this volunteer application form:  Costume Vol Application Form )

The Folk & Costume Museum is looking for volunteers to help out with the largest collection of historic costume on the island.

Volunteering with the museum gives you the opportunity to:

gain access to a unique collection of costume and textiles from Guernsey’s past have a hand in behind the scenes work helping in setting up displays of costume at the museum during the winter months.

Those with historic knowledge and interest will get a chance to work on and develop the museum’s outreach programmes so, as you develop a knowledge associated with the collection, you can work with local interest groups and schools to educate them about the collection.

Those more interested in getting hands on with the collection and capable with a needle and thread, will get a chance to work with the collection in conserving and restoring costume from over the last 250 years.

The range of tasks that you can choose to take part in is varied, so you can pick as much or as little that you want to be involved with. Your time commitment will also vary throughout the year but we are keen to offer all who are interested a role, even if they can only offer a couple of hours a  month to the museum.

So don’t worry if you don’t feel you can do it all, or may not have the time, just contact the museum and find out what opportunities there are for you to take part in the growing team of museum and costume assistants.

It is also currently a unique time to join the museum as a Costume Assistant as the current volunteer head of costumes will be stepping down in 2016 after 45 years in charge and we want as many volunteers to have a chance to work with her before she leaves. This is an opportunity to gain a deep insight into the history of the collection which can then be taken forward as it continues to develop and grow in the future.

If interested or you want information about other volunteering opportunities at the Folk & Costume Museum please contact us on 255384 or email [email protected]

(Expenses incurred working for the museum will be redeemed and discount at the museum shop will be available to those who have given a specified number of hours volunteering)
