World Heritage Day 2014 -'Heritage of Commemoration'

Friday 18th April is World Heritage Day!  International National Trusts Organisation (INTO) have asked world wide member communities to show support of this year's theme 'Heritage of Commemoration'.  National Trust of Guernsey are delighted to join INTO's world-wide incentive. Monuments, sites, events and in our case, two exhibitions, are tangible carriers of the memory, thus an important part of the human experience.  There is a precise fit between one of our 2014 exhibitions and UNESCO's World Heritage site, the City of Bath, famous for thermal springs and the heritage of exemplary Georgian architecture that we admire today.

2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the beginning of the Georgian period of British history.  National Trust of Guernsey Folk & Costume Museum is proud to display some of its oldest costume items, dating from mid 18th century including the exceptional Lord Mayor of London's coat worn by Bailiwick born Paul Le Mesurier.

INTO's theme of Commemoration is partly inspired by the centennial in 2014 of the beginning of the Great War of 1914-1918.  National Trust of Guernsey's full costume exhibition represents Guernsey on the brink of WWI.

Finally, the substantial cobbled courtyard at NTG's Folk & Costume Museum is an outstanding example of local craftmanship using techniques which have remained unchanged for hundreds of years.  The courtyard is undoubtedly a monument to the heritage of Guernsey.
