The National Trust of Guernsey's Folk and Costume Museum at Saumarez Park, will close for the 2017 Season on Wednesday 1st November. Two outstanding exhibitions, curated by Caroline Drake, have been enjoyed by many hundreds of visitors throughout a busy 2017 season.
Enjoy a last gasp of Summer with a visit to the first-floor main exhibition space which harks back to the 1950’s and includes knitted swimsuits, gathered bathers and floral tea dresses. Vintage deckchairs, windbreaks and lots of sand add to the exhibition’s authenticity. The second exhibition case explores the glamour of 1930’s cruise wear, from firty play-suits to elegant chiffon cocktail dresses. A charming third display, focusing on Victorian childhood, is located on the ground floor of the Costume Museum. Victorian fashion, books and toys are all on display.
‘This exhibition showcases how the Victorian era set the framework for modern childhood as we know it. It was the Victorians who introduced us to children’s literature and specific children’s fashions. Prior to this, children really were miniature adults’ – explains Caroline Drake. For those with an interest in Victoriana, the ground-floor exhibition is sure to delight. The Sun, Sea and Sand Exhibition on the first floor will delight visitors as they remember family time spent on their favourite Guernsey beaches.
