The Museum closes for the season this Sunday 27th October at 5pm and with that, Betty Watson’s extraordinary Japanese Silk Embroideries exhibition comes down, along with the rare and remarkable Elegant Georgians costume exhibition on the first floor. Both of these exhibitions are unique and captivating, and if you haven’t already visited, please be sure to pop into the Museum before we close on Sunday.
A memorable and extremely rewarding moment for us this year, has been the sheer emotion showing in the face of a visitor from the Cairngorms as she described how literally full-of-wonder she felt, to stand in front of the 18thC wedding dress belonging to Marie de Carteret. She said that she could feel the occasion, imagining the silk shimmer as if by candlelight and felt transported back to Georgian times. It’s true to say that no matter how many times we walk past the bridal cabinet and the smaller display of gentlemens’ silk waistcoats and vests, we always find the sight and atmosphere arresting. We do hope you have had the chance to see this exhibition.
Following its closure, the Museum will be a very busy place behind the scenes as we prepare to open The Museum Christmas Shop on Friday 15th November. This extremely popular and beautifully put together shop is the highlight of the year for our very talented Shop Manager Ann Segers and assistant Dorothé Lord. It has become a destination for many Islanders seeking fine Christmas gifts for all ages, in an out-of-town shopping area. It is access-friendly and limited accessible parking can be arranged by calling our Museum Manager, Elainer Lainé to arrange by prior appointment.
Also opening on 15th November is our final Art at The Park exhibition for the year. “In my Mind’s Eye” by Val Travers is a collection of paintings using oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel and mixed media. Val's exhibition represents her love of Guernsey's beautiful nature and coastline culminating in an exhibition of freely worked and passionately produced art.
The much-loved Christmas Courtyard Market takes place on Monday 9th December and this year, we are offering a free shuttle bus service from 4.30pm to 8pm between Les Varendes High School lower car park and Saumarez Park. There is parking at Saumarez Park, but it is limited, so please make use of this jolly fun bus if you can. More details of the Christmas Courtyard Market will follow, but please make a note in your diary and come and join us singing carols around the courtyard Christmas tree and mooching through some lovely artisan stalls.
