The National Trust of Guernsey is delighted to host a worldwide first -- the launch of Guernsey Tartan©, created by textile designer Katy Barrett, on Tuesday 26 August 2025 at The Folk and Costume Museum, Saumarez Park.
This special event, open to invited guests of the designer and Trust Members, will be held from 5.30pm – 7.30pm.
We are delighted that the Bailiff of Guernsey will be present to mark the occasion.
Refreshments will be served, and guests will enjoy a unique opportunity to see the collection first-hand, before anyone else, and to meet Katy herself.
About Guernsey Tartan©
The creation of Guernsey Tartan is a landmark moment in the island’s cultural history. Approved by the Bailiff and woven in Scotland, this family-run textile project celebrates Guernsey’s identity, capturing memory and meaning in every thread.
Each colour in the tartan reflects a story of the island: Orange-brown – the iconic Guernsey cow | Grey – the steadfast Guernsey donkey | Blue – the traditional fisherman’s guernsey jumper | Green – the Island’s sporting colours | Pink – the Nerine Sarniensis, the Guernsey Lily | White, red, and yellow – the colours of the Guernsey flag.
The Designer
Katy Barrett, founder and creative force behind Guernsey Tartan, has long combined traditional craft with practical design. From learning to sew as a child to repairing sails and creating bespoke pieces, her skills and passion for weaving have culminated in this enduring design.
Born from inspiration during the pandemic, and with support from the Guernsey Scottish Association, the tartan now stands as an evocative symbol of Guernsey’s heritage. It will be launched with a first collection of limited products, giving Islanders and visitors alike a chance to wear or own a tangible piece of Guernsey’s story.
Where to Buy
From Wednesday 27th September – and ahead of the official Guernsey Tartan website launch in early September 2025 – the National Trust of Guernsey’s Folk and Costume Museum is privileged to display a selection of items available to order. Each piece is bespoke and, therefore, made-to-order. However, there may be some limited stock for smaller items, and it is true to say “the early bird catches the worm”. Otherwise, a three-month order-to-delivery timeframe applies. Orders placed at the launch or soon afterwards will arrive in time for Christmas.
Guernsey Tartan will be displayed within the Fishermens’ Exhibition on the Museum’s ground floor, accessible from the courtyard. Order forms will be available on site and should be handed in to our staff at the Museum Shop kiosk.
The Folk and Costume Museum is open seven days a week, 10am–5pm, until Friday 31st October.
Our very popular Museum Christmas Shop, with a special showcase for Guernsey Tartan opens on Friday 16th November until Saturday 20th December.
