National Trust of Guernsey were thrilled to be invited along to Condor's Guernsey-based launch of their new ship 'Liberation' followed by her inaugural sailing to our sister island of Jersey.
The crew's sense of pride in 'Liberation' was palpable and we enjoyed a contagious atmosphere of excitement and celebration.
Being able to freely roam around the ship from the bridge to the car decks was a rare treat – particularly the sight of a vacant car deck. The decks are fascinating and (to this bird) a remarkable engineering feat. They are in sections, all of which can be hydraulically raised or lowered according to the type of vehicle load. These logistics can be addressed quickly and at each port of call.
There are three engine rooms; a tank of fuel on 'Liberation' is the equivalent of 800 car fuel tanks. At 35 knots it travels faster than a Great White Shark. That's reassuring.
For those who are really interested, here's the engine spec:
3 x MTU V20 8000M71L (power 9100 kw each)
Passenger comfort is well addressed with spacious lounges and a vast quantity of comfortable seats. The duty free shop is bright, glossy and more akin to a high-end airport duty free shop. Another welcome change. Around and about, there are quiet zones, activity zones for children and generally the ship is airy and easy to move around.
The crew seemed very happy with new uniforms and corporate colours. Smart grey dresses or suits are embellished with dusky pinks, purples and sand-gold accessories.
The speeches were a pleasure to listen to. Chief Minister, Jonathan le Tocq gave a welcome speech, admirably spoken in part in Guernsey-french, Jersey-french and, I believe, French-french too. Medalled army veteran Eric Walker spoke movingly about his role in being part of F135 liberating force which arrived in Guernsey on 9th May 1945. In those days, Eric Walker was Sapper Eric Walker. His tone and words are unequivocally memorable.
"We gave you the gift of freedom to travel the world. With Condor's 'Liberation' you have the freedom to travel the world"
Each speaker added to a gathering sense of a respected history and an exciting future for Condor.
We are very grateful to have shared this unique day and event with Condor. Congratulations to Condor on the launch of 'Liberation', which boat – ironically – can also transport tanks.
Don't panic Mr. Mannering ...
