Charlie Buchanan is a Guernsey-based artist and illustrator whose work explores storytelling, folklore, and the deep connections we share across generations, landscapes and seascapes. A Fine Art Painting graduate from Falmouth, Charlie travelled widely before returning to the island to raise her family, teach, and paint.
Her upcoming exhibition at the Art at The Park Gallery 'Swimmers and Other Stories', running from 30 September to 24 October, features a new body of work inspired by her most recent journey—this time, a literal one.
Having trained to swim from Guernsey to Herm, Charlie has immersed herself in the tidal waters that define island life. This elemental experience has shaped a series of artworks that move from narrative illustration to something more visceral and mythic, echoing the power and presence of the sea.
Working primarily in watercolour, Charlie’s imagery often weaves the real with the imagined. She has illustrated several books, including The Book of Ebenezer Le Page (2022) and the forthcoming edition of Mr Pye, both published by Extraordinary Editions.
Her work has been exhibited in Guernsey, Jersey, the UK and Spain, and she continues to draw influence from the likes of Alfred Bestall, Angela Barrett, Andrew Wyeth and Sally Mann.
